How To Strengthen Your Teeth

Do you know that our teeth can get weak over time? As we age, our teeth lose minerals and weaken. And once the enamel has been worn away, we can’t get it back unless we replace the whole teeth. But we can do many things at every age to keep our teeth strong and healthy.

Good oral hygiene plays a major role in keeping teeth healthy and strong, so it’s essential to establish and maintain a proper oral hygiene routine. Your daily oral care should include:

  • Brush your teeth in the morning and night.
  • Use a tooth-strengthening toothpaste, like fluoride toothpastes.
  • Use an interdental cleaner, like dental floss, to remove food debris and plaque between teeth.
  • Gently brush tongue with toothbrush during normal toothbrushing time.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and early detection and treatment of oral issue.

Establish A Teeth Strengthening Diet

Foods we eat play an important role in building strong teeth. Healthy teeth need nutritional foods with high amount of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin to strengthen and rebuild tooth enamel. Here are some foods with these nutrients:

  • Dairy food like milk, plain yogurt, cheese
  • Leafy greens like kale, spinach
  • Calcium-fortified foods; cereal, canned sardines, tofu
  • Protein-rich food like meat, poultry, fish, and eggs

You can also eat veggies and fruits for Vitamin C, and nuts for minerals. Eating them can stimulate saliva production. Saliva contains minerals like calcium and fluoride, which keep the surface of your teeth strong. Saliva also washes away food debris from teeth and gums. Chewing sugarless gums also increase saliva production, and can dilute acids in the mouth or remove sugar, carbs, and plaque from teeth. Don’t forget to drink lots of water throughout the day. It’s great to keep mouth clean and avoid bad breath from a dry mouth.

Try To Avoid These Foods

  • Acidic fruits. Citrus fruits are a source of Vitamin C, but they’re also high in sugars and acids. The acids from these fruits will bind to calcium and strip it away. As well, fruit juices also cause calcium chelation, which contain not only acids but also lots of sugar. Enjoy them in moderation.
  • Sugar-containing foods and drinks. Sugar create acid in mouth that erode tooth enamel and cavities form when sugar and bacteria in the mouth combine.
  • Coffee and tea.

To strengthen teeth, you need to have a consistent combination of oral hygiene practices, healthy diet, and regular dental care. Although mineral loss of teeth is inevitable, you can eat nutritious snacks and those foods mentioned above in daily life.
