Do You Know How to Brush Your Teeth?

Brushing teeth is an important part of a complete dental care routine, but do you brush your teeth in the proper way?

Below are some teeth-brushing tips from the American Dental Association (ADA).

The Proper Brushing Technique:

  • Step 1: Start with the outer surface of your teeth. Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gum.
  • Step 2: Gently move the brush back and force in short brush, tooth-wide strokes.
  • Step 3: Brush the inner surface of your teeth. Tilt your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and  brush back and force as well.
  • Step 4: Clean the chewing surfaces of your teeth. Still use short back and forth strokes to brush the tops of the back teeth.
  • Step 5: Clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth. Place your toothbrush vertically and brush up and down.

Brushing teeth with the right technique is a good star to dental health. It is also important to have the right tools and avoid some commom mistakes. Here are some tips for better brushing your teeth.

  • Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. Set a timer or use a toothbrush with timer to make sure you brush long enough.
  • Choose a soft-bristled brush. The size and shape of your brush should also fit your mouth making sure you can better reach all areas of the mouth.
  • Replace your toothbrush regularly. It is recommened that replace brush every three to four months or when the bristles fray, whichever comes first.
  • Choose toothpaste accroding to personal needs. Toothpaste types vary from improving sensitivity and fighting cavities to whitening teeth, and make sure to choose one depending on your particular needs. If you are not sure which type is better, turn to dentist or dental hygienist for help.

Proper teeth brushing, regular visit to dentist, and a balanced diet can keep your smile healthy and happy.
